Sixth form · Year 12 entry

Sixth form at a grammar school, even if they didn't start there

Many families don't realise the Gloucestershire grammar schools are an option again at sixth form, even if their child went somewhere else from Year 7. Entry at 16 is based on each school's GCSE requirements, not the 11+. The journey is the part worth sorting early.

Tell us the sixth form, your year and your postcode. No charge to register.

Key dates for Sixth form families

  • Year 10, from the autumn: Start exploring. Open evenings run through the autumn and winter.
  • The Crypt, Thursday 5 November 2026: Sixth-form open evening.
  • Sir Thomas Rich's, Thursday 28 January 2027: Sixth-form open evening.
  • Pate's, Tuesday 2 February 2027: Sixth-form open evening.
  • August 2027: GCSE results. Offers and places are confirmed after results; tell us the school and we talk seats.

Dates change each year, so always check the individual school's own admissions policy before relying on them.

School coach route planning

Entry at 16 is based on GCSEs, not the 11+

Pate's, Sir Thomas Rich's, The Crypt, Ribston Hall, Denmark Road, Marling and Stroud High all accept external applicants into sixth form. Entry is based on each school's own GCSE requirements, rather than the 11+ the school may have used at Year 7.

That means a grammar school sixth form is genuinely open to a student who went to a different school lower down. Each school sets its own subjects, grades and application dates, so check the individual school's website before relying on any date.

Register transport interest before you apply

You don't need to wait until you have applied for sixth form, or received an offer, to register your transport interest. Registering early is free and commits you to nothing, and it tells us where students are actually travelling from, which is how we plan where future stops and routes should be.

Register for every sixth form you are considering. Nothing is paid to register, and sixth-form places and fees are confirmed with you directly after GCSE results.
